Portuguese Classes
for Performance
 & Public Life

Learning Portuguese at BEA is always a unique experience. We customize our Portuguese lessons to meet the needs and interests of our students. So, whether you need to learn Portuguese before your trip to Brazil, for fun, business or for your career, we have a class tailored for you. In addition, because of our rich cultural atmosphere, here you can get additional practice by attending our events that include music performances, art exhibitions, movie screenings, recitals, and conferences. BEA is also home to the first library founded in New York. The Machado de Assis Library contains over 4,000 titles that can be used by all of our students.

Private Classes

The individual attention we provide in our private classes allows you to learn at your own pace and focus on your individual strengths and weaknesses. Our personalized learning program allows you to negotiate the lesson subject with the teacher, concentrate your studies on specific grammar topics or improve a vocabulary that you may need. Our private courses are open to adult learners with any level of proficiency: beginning, intermediate, or advanced.

Semi-Private Classes

In our semi-private program we set up a class for two to four students with similar abilities and skills in Portuguese. Learning in a small group allows you to develop confidence and important interactive skills, while receiving a more individualized attention than in a group class environment. Semi-private classes are perfect for couples, coworkers or friends who have similar goals and objectives for training. So, if you know someone who would like to join you, we are happy to set up a class for you and your friend(s). Our semi-private courses are open to adult learners with any level of proficiency: beginning, intermediate, or advanced.

Conversational Portuguese Workshop

When studying a language, speaking with high level of proficiency can be difficult at times. If you want to improve your conversational Portuguese and increase your ability to express yourself in a faster and pleasurable way, our conversational Portuguese workshop will be perfect for you.

The main idea of our workshop is not only to improve your oral communication skills, but also to give you the opportunity to reach this goal by discussing topics of your interest. Therefore, our workshop is slightly different from most conversational Portuguese classes offered by other language courses. Instead of working in pairs or in small groups to practice a specific vocabulary or expression, our participants are engaged in a discussion of a particular topic about Brazil, and are encouraged to debate, give opinions, and ask questions. During the discussion, we will work to improve your pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. At the same time, we offer you the opportunity to learn and share information about current issues on the Brazilian economy, politics, society and culture. By the end of the workshop, you will have demonstrated progress in the following skills:

·       Vocabulary

·       Spoken grammar

·       Listening Comprehension

·       Conversational

·       Knowledge of cross-cultural issues

Our conversational workshop is discussed in weekly modules of 1 ½ hour, every Monday, from 7pm to 8:30pm. Every 4 to 5 weeks we initiate the discussion of a new topic. You must sign up by topic.  This workshop is design to adult learners with intermediate and advanced level of proficiency.
