August 12th - The Brotherhood of the Jug Band Blues – Americana/blues/hip hop
The
Brotherhood of the Jug Band Blues was
founded by elements of the former jug bands, the Brooklyn Jugs, Jug Free
America and Banjorama. They became popular playing in the New York City Subways
as a part of the MUNY (Music Under New York) program, sponsored by the MTA.
They also play festivals, club dates and private engagements. Country Blues mixed with Latin Hip Hop
and Old Time Juju translate into a true Urban Jug Band. Ernesto "Lovercat" Gomez leads on vocals,
guitar, kazoo, harmonica, and cajon with Arturo "the Jugman" Style on
jug and harmonica and Eli "Sweet Son" Smith on vocals, washboard,
guitar, and fiddle.
Jug bands originated in the South and enjoyed
popularity around the St. Louis and Memphis area during the 20s and 30s, then
nationwide during the 60s.

August 19th - Julia Tygel and Rodrigo Ursaia - Brazilian music
Júlia
Tygel is a young Brazilian pianist and composer. She grew up in Campinas/SP,
beginning her piano practice at 7 years old. She graduated in Music/Composition
at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), where she also concluded the
Master degree in Ethnomusicology in 2009. Now she does her doctoral studies at
São Paulo University (USP) in Music and is at the City University of New York
as a visiting research student with a Fulbright grant. She recently recorded
her first CD - "Júlia Tygel - Entremeados", with financial support of
the prefecture of her home town in Brazil. It presents her arrangements for
Brazilian songs, including composers like Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque and Edu
Lobo, and compositions in majority for piano and cello duo, produced by
Benjamim Taubkin (Brazil). Her compositions and arrangements mix the influences
of the classical musical education with the rich Brazilian popular music. She
has been recently playing this repertory at important rooms dedicated to
instrumental music in São Paulo, where she is being recognized as a talented
musician of her generation.
