É uma organização sem fins lucrativos
que visa a promover a cultura, artes e letras brasileiras nos
Estados Unidos. A BEA cumpre sua função através da promoção de
conferências, exposicoes de arte, aulas de português, recitais
de música e mostra de filmes e documentários.
Além
dos eventos, a BEA também sedia a Biblioteca Machado de Assis,
primeira biblioteca brasileira em Nova York, que conta atualmente
com um acervo de mais de 4000 títulos. Estes livros são frutos
de doações da Biblioteca Nacional , Academia Brasileira de Letras,
instituições privadas e dezenas de doações individuais.

sob código 501 (c) (3) do Imposto de Renda.
Mission of the BRAZILIAN
ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS
The main goal of the Brazilian Endowment for the Arts is to further enhance the exchange of cultures between Brazil and the United States of America. It strives to achieve this goal by promoting the use of Brazilian texts and arts in the United States. Additionally, BEA promotes
local artists, writers, musicians and cinematographers that reveal the Brazilian culture through various artistic mediums. By opening its doors to artists, BEA has created a multifunctional performance space which provides various artists with a place to showcase and perform their work. Most importantly, by working with educational institutions and a wide array of
organizations, BEA promotes the Brazilian culture and language in the United States.

José Domício Coutinho nasceu
em João Pessoa, Brasil. Ainda pequeno, foi para Pernambuco
com sua família. Aos 12 anos de idade foi para o
seminário no Recife, e depois Olinda. Graduou-se em
Filosofia no Rio Grande do Sul. Bacharelou-se em Teologia
em Roma. Faltava um ano para ordenar-se quando deixou a vocação. No Recife, bacharelou-se em Anglo-
germânicas e concluiu o 2º ano de Direito.
Em New
York há 48 anos, trabalhou na Pan American e fez mestrado em Letras na Universidade da cidade de Nova York.
Em 1976, a Pongetti edita seu primeiro livro de poesias “Salamônica”. Em 1980 defende a tese doutoral em
Literatura Comparada,
inicia magistério e colabora em
jornais literários e revistas de cultura.
Em 1986,
aposenta-se da Pan American para dedicar-se aos negócios
da família, administração de imóveis. Em 1998 pública o
primeiro romance , Duke, o Cachorro Padre.
Em 1999
criou a Medalha do Mérito Machado de Assis. Em 2000 a
Bagaço
edita seu segundo romance “Incríveis revelações
de uma minhoca”. Em 2001
é condecorado com a medalha de Rio Branco no grau de Comendador. Em
2004 funda a
BEA ( Brazilian Endowment for the Arts). Em 2005 a Bagaço lança a 3ª edição de “Duke, o cachorro
padre”. E em 2006 cria a Brazilian Endowment for the Arts, BEA.
José Domício Coutinho
José Domício Coutinho is a Brazilian novelist, writer, and founder of the Brazilian Endowment for
the Arts. He was born in Joao
Pessoa, Brazil. At the Gregorian
University of Rome, he earned his degree in Theology and Modern Philosophy. Back in Brazil, he got his bachelor
degree in Anglo-Saxon Literature. In
the United States, he pursued his studies, and earned a Master in Portuguese Literature
and a Ph. D. in Comparative Literature from CUNY. He then pursued a teaching career in a program designed by Fordham
University, Marymount, and Saint Vincent College.
In 1976, his first book of poetry, Salomonica, was published in Rio de
Janeiro. For the next twenty years
he dedicated himself, together with his wife and children, to build a powerful
structure of his own real estate properties in New York City, which became a
successful family business.
In 1998, he published in Portuguese his first novel, Duke, o Cachorro Padre, well received in Spain
as Duke, el Perro Cura, and lately in the United States as Duke, the Dog
Priest. In 2002, he published The Love Affair
of Fishing Bates, with a Casa Nova kind of shark, which makes for a powerful satire of
today’s myths and traditions.
In 2004, he founded the Brazilian Endowment for the Arts, a not-for-profit organization
aimed at cultivating, preserving and developing Brazilian arts and literature
in the United States. In the same
year he was honored by the Government of Brazil as Commander of the Order of
Rio Branco, an honor bestowed upon those who have excelled in services
performed for their country.
In 2006, founded the First Brazilian Library of New York, recognized by the
highest cultural institutions of his country to receive their publications. The library presently holds approximately
4,000 books, along with films and magazines, and has been recognized by the
Brazilian Culture Ministry, the National Library and the Library of the Senate
to receive their publications.
