The Joaquim
Nabuco Institute, under the
auspices of The Brazilian
Endowment for the Arts
presents "The New Brazil on the World Stage."
September 12 and 13
Columbia University's Center For Brazilian
Studies

What is the role of the new Brazil on the world stage? What is the
significance of Brazil being the only BRIC country in the hemisphere? What are
the challenges, opportunities, and possible strategic alliances between the
United States and Brazil? In light of the great changes in Latin America, what
should the relationship between these two great democracies be? And what
lessons can diplomat par excellence
Joaquim Nabuco teach us?
The Brazilian
Endowment for the Arts (BEA) sponsors this international symposium with the
intent of fostering greater understanding and integration between the United
States and Brazil, giving special importance to the power of the word, which
was used so effectively by Nabuco during his lifetime
The symposium will bring together diplomats, statesmen,
professors, researchers, and Brazilianists who will
discuss the challenges and potential of Brazil and Latin America in the twenty-first
century and what this new geopolitical reality will mean for the United States.
The event will begin with opening remarks by Professor
Thomas Trebat,
Executive Director, Institute of Latin American Studies, Center for Brazilian
Studies; Dr. Domicio Coutinho, founder and president of
BEA; and Dr. João Lyra Neto, Lieutenant Governor of the State of Pernambuco.
José Sarney,
President of the Brazilian Senate and member of the Brazilian Academy of
Letters, will give the keynote speech at 6 pm on September 12, 2011. *
The symposium will continue with the following
sessions:
· "The Brazilian China: The
Northeast, the Case of Pernambuco", with a speech by Francisco Tadeu
Barbosa de Alencar,
a sociologist and secretary of the governor’s office for the State of
Pernambuco
· "Brazil Among the BRIC
Countries", with a speech by Luiz Felipe de Seixas Corrêa, Consul General of Brazil in New
York.
At 8 pm there will be a cocktail and musical
performance.
On September 13th, there will be the following
sessions:
· A speech by Antonio Patriota, Minister of Foreign Affairs of
Brazil entitled "Brazil Among the Leaders of the 21st Century". *
· Roundtable I - "US - Brazil
Relations In light of the New Latin America"
· Roundtable II - Brazil and Latin America, “A
New and Challenging Scenario for the United States” Prof. . Trebat Thomas - Executive Director, Institute
of Latin American Studies, Center for Brazilian Studies, Columbia University,
· "The Challenges of Education
in the new Brazil"
- Fernando Freire,
President of the Fundação Joaquim Nabuco – MEC.
· "The Resumption of
Development in Brazil: The Recent Legacy and Challenges for this Decade and
Those to Come
"- Aristides Monteiro Neto, Chief Advisor, Office of Planning and Institutional
Coordination - Presidency of Brazil.
In the afternoon there will be the following
sessions:
· Roundtable III: “The Role of the New Brazil
on the World Stage. The Political and Economic Evolution of Today’s Brazil, and
Its Place in the World.”
· “The Strategic thoughts of
Joaquim Nabuco and their Relevence for Today” - Humberto França, Fundação Joaquim Nabuco - MEC

And Future” - Marshal Eakin, President of the Brazilian Studies

The symposiumwill close with a Diploma awards Ceremony.
